Finding Fireflies and Friends

July 10 @ 8:15 pm - 9:45 pm

July 10 / 8:15 – 9:45 pm (rain date July 11th)
Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary
8 Commerce Rd.
FREE

Every night, a world arises from the twilight, bringing forth some of the smallest insects often hidden from sight during the day. Have you ever seen a big dipper firefly or common eastern firefly? Or a potato leafhopper, northern caddisfly, or June beetle? Join us at the sanctuary to meet our amazing nighttime insect friends! Together, we’ll watch the woodlands come alive with hundreds of twinkling firefly lights…a rare and truly magical experience you’ll never forget. Using all our senses, we’ll also listen for forktailed bush katydids, snowy tree and field crickets, and maybe catch a glimpse of a luna or cecropia moth.

Led by renowned entomologist, Dr. Rayda Krell, we’ll use a few entomological “tricks” to get a closer look at just how many of these creatures are out at night. By the end of the evening, you will have seen over 30 insect species and thousands of individual insects!
